I am working over my rather inadequate Hebrew with a resource recommended to me by James Robson, who teaches Hebrew at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford. It is called Living Biblical Hebrew and is produced by the Biblical Language Center (www.biblicallanguagecenter.com) (remember the American spelling of 'center'). The distinctive feature of these resources is that they teach you Hebrew as a living language (hence the title), with the primary emphasis being on hearing and speaking the language. They claim – and I think they are probably right – that learning any language this way makes learning more efficient, both in terms of grasping the grammar and for getting vocabulary into your memory. As well as a workbook, the resource consists of a large number of MP3 audio tracks which accompany the workbook. There are written tests too, so it is not all oral and aural. I am finding it helpful and as close to enjoyable as language learning is likely to get for me.
