»Not by might, nor by power :: Spirit-filled ministry «
The twenty-seventh EMA will be held from 23 - 25 June 2010 at St Helen's Church, Bishopsgate, London.
The main speakers are Rupert Bentley-Taylor, John Piper, Christopher Ash and Vaughan Roberts.
Both the Scriptures and the history of the Church teach us that our best efforts are futile without the enabling power of the Holy Spirit.
We cannot survive as people of the Word without also being people of the Spirit. But how do these two elements combine? And what does Spirit filled
ministry really look like? This year's EMA focus is the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the preacher, which must include both our public
preaching ministry and our personal walk with Christ Jesus. Come along and be encouraged!
EMA 2010 has some new elements which we trust you will appreciate and find stimulating. Importantly, we are setting aside time to pray
together and for one another, specifically responding to the exhortation and encouragement we will receive. In addition, we are going to
host a public 'conversation' between those who hold differing views on the ministry of the Spirit today. This will, we trust, help clarify
our own thinking and continue to challenge our views on some secondary, yet important matters.
The Programme:
EMA Bible readings:
Rupert Bentley-Taylor
Rupert Bentley-Taylor will be joining us this year to expound God's word with a particular focus on encouraging us in our preaching
and teaching ministry. Many of us come to the conference from difficult or stretching church situations and it is important to feed
our own souls if we are to effectively minister to others.
Ministry focus:
The preacher and the Holy Spirit: John Piper
It is a joy to welcome John Piper back to the EMA. In his own inimitable style, John will teach us from the Scriptures about the work
of the Spirit in the life of the preacher: Living by the power of the Spirit; Preaching in the power of the Spirit; Praying in the power
of the Spirit.
Theological focus:
Word and Spirit in John's gospel: Christopher Ash
Christopher Ash will lead us with some foundational sessions on the relationship between Word and Spirit in John's gospel. Without this
grounding our appreciation of the Spirit's work will be vague and in great danger of being misguided.
Historical focus:
George Whitefield: Vaughan Roberts
Vaughan Roberts, Director of the Proclamation Trust, will continue last year's biographical theme with an address on the work of the Spirit
in the life of George Whitefield. The history of the church in this country provides a rich storehouse of how God has worked in and through
jars of clay. More than just a history lesson, this session will fill us with confidence and excitement about what our Almighty God is able
to do despite our weaknesses.
New for 2010!
An honest conversation...
What we really want to discover is how, practically, our views on the work of the Holy Spirit affect our Christian ministry.
We have invited four pastors from differing backgrounds to join in an honest conversation about how they see things working themselves out.
These kinds of discussions are a great way to sharpen our application of key doctrines and explore secondary matters: understanding that,
whilst we unite around the core of the Gospel, there are issues over which we can differ; and yet we have much to learn from each other.
Thursday afternoon seminars
This year sees the return of our seminars under five distinct streams: practical; personal; historical; missional and theological.
> Practical: a conversation over the role of prophecy in the church today.
> Personal: addressing the question of the preacher's personal walk in more detail with particular reference to the work of the Spirit in producing holiness.
> Historical: the history of the Reformation with a particular emphasis on the reawakening of the church to the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
> Missional: exploring some of the patterns and lessons that we can learn from the African church in relation to the ministry of the Spirit.
> Theological: an overview of the place of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Old Testament people of God.
