»EMA 2008 :: Him we proclaim«
The twenty-fifth EMA will be held from
The theme:
On this anniversary EMA our focus is firmly set on preaching. Slowly, but surely, systematic expository preaching has returned
to many churches, but there is still work to do! At this year's assembly we want to ask some simple, but searching questions:
> Why preaching?
> What exactly is preaching?
> What about the preacher?
The programme:
Why preaching? - Christopher Ash will address this question with three sessions, building out from the book of
Deuteronomy. With a unifying principle of 'shaped by grace', his sessions will focus on:
> God's people under God's word
> God's people transformed by God's word
> God's people transforming the world through God's word
What exactly is preaching? - John Woodhouse. These sessions will address the culture that speaks of preaching in
terms of 'getting the text right', 'explaining the Bible' or 'teaching the Bible'. Preaching must never be simply explanation
but proclamation. Our task is to proclaim Christ through Christ-exalting preaching. John will address the issue of what it means to preach Christ with three expositions:
> Fullness in Christ - Colossians 1:1-14
> Supremacy of Christ - Colossians 1:15-23
> Proclaiming Christ - Colossians 1:24-2:5
What about the preacher? - Kent Hughes will tackle two subjects in his sessions at EMA:
> Leading under God: the affections of the preacher
> Leading under God: the heart of the preacher
These sessions will seek to bring us back to true preaching which embraces the conviction of the preacher - sensitivity to the
tenor of the passage, together with sensitivity to the eternal issues at stake in the lives of those submitting to the authority of the word.
We will also be reminded of the marriage of 'prayer and the ministry of the word', which, for the vast majority of us, are
unequal partners. The heart of the preacher is a praying heart, consciously dependent on the Lord, without whom we can do nothing.
