| Preaching from the Old Testament I | While the evangelical church is convinced that the Old Testament is the word of God, we do not preach from it much. We, like those on the road to Emmaus, are "foolish and slow of heart to believe" when presented with the truths of the Old Testament. Yet these are the writings of 2 Timothy, able to "make you wise unto salvation." "Here is your God!" Isaiah 40 This is the first of three lectures by Walter Kaiser on preaching from the old Testament. This lecture looks at the challenge of preaching from the prophets, and presenting the "living God" whom they presented. He uses Isaiah 40 as an example: a passage which brings us face to face with the majesty of God. The second and third talks in this series can be found here and here. | FREE | ||
| Preaching from the Old Testament II | This is the second of three lectures by Walter Kaiser on preaching from the Old Testament. In this session he looks at preaching narrative. Preaching narrative is enormously satisfying: it is hard to find someone who doesn't like a really good story, especially one in which they can see the reality of everyday life. The difficulty of preaching them lies in discovering what abiding truth they are communicating, and understanding how they speak to issues now, in our day. Dr Kaiser shows us how to approach these passages both through general principles and through an example from the story of Elijah, 1 Kings 17. The first and third talks in this series can be found here. and here. | FREE | ||
| Preaching from the Old Testament III | This is the third of three sessions on preaching from the Old Testament by Walter Kaiser, given at the 1987 Evangelical Ministry Assembly. In this session he looks at Old Testament Poetry. "will you not revive us, so that your people may rejoice in you" Psalm 85 Taking Psalm 85 as an example, he shows how powerfully this poetry can speak to the whole people of God. The psalm itself calls on God for renewal and revival, a prayer that all of us are encouraged to join. The first and second talks in this series can be found here and here. | FREE |
