Concerning Preaching

Those of us who believe in the importance of preaching can be exposed to a subtle danger: obsession with preaching that leads us away from God himself. We can think more about the form than the content of our preaching. We can forget God's power and look to our own abilities.

William Philip asks how we can avoid this danger and keep God at the centre of all we do.

How to preach apocalyptic literature

Apocalyptic literature is challenging to preach: strange, symbolic, and often totally misunderstood. Yet through it God presents the big picture of history. Understanding it opens our eyes to the work of Christ, redeeming his church and finally defeating evil

In this seminar from EMA 2006, Bob Fyall asks what apocalyptic literature is, and goes on to show that we can preach Christ from it with great confidence.

Preaching Christ from the Old Testament

Preaching Christ is the great purpose of the Christian expositor. But how do we preach Christ from the Old Testament without falsely allegorizing or spiritualising? Sinclair Ferguson shares some principles that will help us to stay true to the original purposes and historical reality of the text, while drawing out the riches of grace which are proclaimed in Jesus Christ

While the temptation is to look for a simple formula, a quick fix, which will allow us to do this without effort, Sinclair Ferguson wants to help us become preachers with an instinct for preaching Christ from the whole of scripture

The Law of Promise

Because we love the gospel of free grace, we are often wary of preaching the law. We do not want to turn people towards works-based salvation.

Yet Paul, who rejected the works of the law, also said,

"I agree with the law, that it is good" Romans 7:22-25.

William Philip shows us how the law is an integral part of the gospel, witnessing to grace. Not only was it given to show the response of man to the gracious love of a covenant God, it is still a great help to the believer in the daily struggle with sin.

What's so special about preaching?

There are many forces that conspire to keep us from putting our hearts and souls into preaching. There are many voices that say that it is presumptuous, or simply pointless. As a result, there are many preachers who are thoroughly discouraged and worn out.

To encourage us, David Jackman first shows us that Jesus himself was a preacher, and then goes on to dismantle various objections to preaching. Then he examines what preaching really is.

He shows that to it is an amazing privilege and responsibility, that if it is done rightly, people will meet God, and God's rule in their souls will be restored.
