Instruction On Matthew

One of the great and often forgotten themes of Jesus' teaching is that of the Kingdom of God. In these five lectures, David Jackman examines this theme, and its importance to understanding the Gospel of Matthew, and understanding Jesus himself

In particular we see Jesus as the great teacher, who reveals by his words and his works the mind and the purposes of God. Even when he leaves us, he leaves us with the command not only to make disciples, but to teach them, until he returns to establish his great kingdom for all eternity.

  1. 1. The Kingdom as fulfillment - Matthew 5
  2. 2. The Mission of the Kingdom - Matthew 10
  3. 3. Kingdom Realism - Matthew 13
  4. 4. The Kingdom Community - Matthew 18
  5. 5. The Coming of the Kingdom - Matthew 24-25

Instruction On John 3 - 6
"these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" John 20:31

John's Gospel is an inexhaustible treasure-house for the preacher: during fifty years of ministry, Dick Lucas turned to it again and again.

In these lectures he examines the familiar verses at the end of John 20, which tell us why John wrote his book.

Taking what he has learned from these verses, he demonstrates from chapters 3-6 how this helps us understand and preach the rest of the Gospel. In the process he finds a number of fresh insights into these chapters, as well as giving much useful advice that will help anyone preaching or teaching from them.

The sessions are as follows;

  1. 1. Using the Key - John 20:30-31
  2. 2. John 3
  3. 3. John 4
  4. 4. John 5
  5. 5. John 6
  6. This material was previously available in the "From my study to yours" series.

Instruction On Acts

The book of Acts shows the unstoppable power of God's gospel: despite all opposition it never stops its spread. It challenges us to have confidence in a God who works to bring that gospel to those who have not heard it.

By looking at Acts in light of its over-arching themes and purposes, David Cook helps us to preach Acts with confidence. He shows how this approach will help us get beyond the bickering between Christians that so often marks our approach to the book. Instead, it will inspire us to see God's gospel spread throughout the world.

If you found these lectures useful, you may also be interested in David Cook's book on Acts, which covers the whole book, and aims to help the preacher or bible teacher communicate and apply it.

Instruction On 2 Peter
"Make your calling and election sure"

The little letter of 2 Peter, with its powerful warnings against falling away, and against false teaching, contains many puzzles for the expositor. There are many commentaries which discuss these, but little to relate those discussions to the life of the Christian and of the church. Dick Lucas looks at how the preacher can do exactly that, because it is preaching that changes the church.

In the process, he faces the tough issue of apostasy with the awareness that it is a real problem in all our churches. Peter's warnings are not abstract theology, but a much-needed call to the church today.

  1. 1. The Judas factor and how to avoid it - 1:2
  2. 2. Growing into salvation - 1:3-11
  3. 3. The Pure Gospel - 1:12-21
  4. 4. Standing against the tides of time - 1:1-10
  5. 5. Many Antichrists - 2:10-16
  6. 6. Lord over all generations - 3:1-10
  7. 7. Here comes the Judge - 3:11-18
  8. 8. Summary: Does 2 Peter speak today?

Instruction on Philippians
"I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings" Philippians 3:10

Philippians is a devotional classic, and has been the favourite book of many Christians over the years. In these lectures, however, Dick Lucas helps us to get closer to what Paul's purpose was in writing to the Philippians, a church that was called to suffer for Christ just as Paul himself did.

Seeing the letter in light of its purpose will help us better understand the whole - in particular what it means for our daily lives in a culture that is increasingly hostile to the gospel.

These four lectures, given at the Teach-in days 2008, cover the whole book of Philippians for all those who wish to preach or teach it
