EMA 2011: Preaching that Connects

“How then can we be conservative and radical simultaneously, conservative in guarding God’s revelation and radical in our thoroughgoing application of it? How can we develop a Christian mind which is shaped by the truths of historic, biblical Christianity and acquainted with the realities of the contemporary world?” John Stott

The conference recordings from the 2011 Evangelical Ministry Assembly focus on how we can relate our ministry and our preaching to the world in which we live. How do we communicate unchanging gospel truth to a changing culture?

EMA 2007

 ‘evangelicals are evangel people.’

What does it really mean to live and minister as an Evangelical in our times? Now free for the first time, Defining Times, the 2007 Evangelical Ministry Assembly is available as an mp3 download.

The plenary sessions by Tim Keller focus on what it really means to be an Evangelical. Against a background of criticism from the wider world outside our movement, and fragmentation within it, it matters more than ever that we know exactly why we are evangelicals. And if we really believe these things, then they must shape our ministries and overcome our own cultural prejudices and failings.

The rest of the conference includes Dick Lucas taking us through Philippians; Vaughan Roberts looking at Daniel; Richard Cunningham on Persuasive Preaching; David Jackman on Training in the local church; and five seminars – Ministry in the City, Rural ministry, Who decides what the Bible means, the Emerging Church and Music and the Word.

Please note that the mp3 download is very large (~175Mb) since it contains around 11 hours of audio.

The Christian Leader as Evangelist

‘The major themes this morning will not be unfamiliar to you, but their importance is impossible to overstate.’

In this archive recording from the 1993 Evangelical Ministry Assembly, Dick Lucas lays out three core elements in any evangelistic ministry. In the process he looks at the how we can do evangelism more faithfully – and therefore more effectively.

The Key to Romans

In this classic talk from the 1989 Evangelical Ministry Assembly Dick Lucas asks why Paul wrote Romans. In the process he sees how its theology, the gospel laid out, produces mission - mission that will save not just individuals but united communities shaped by the gospel. What does this mean for our churches? And what does it mean for our theological colleges?

Buy last year's complete Evangelical Ministry Assembly set

Both the Scriptures and the history of the Church teach us that our best efforts are futile without the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. We cannot survive as people of the Word without also being people of the Spirit. But how do these two elements combine? And what does Spirit filled ministry really look like?  EMA 2010 focused on the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the preacher, which must include both our public preaching ministry and our personal walk with Christ Jesus.

The EMA talks can be purchased on MP3 CDs or downloaded as an MP3 ZIP archive.

The set includes:

  • Two sessions on 'Word and Spirit in John' by Christopher Ash
  • Three sessions from Judges by Rupert Bentley-Taylor
  • Three sessions - living, preaching and praying in the power of the  spirit - by John Piper
  • A session on the work of the Spirit in the life of George Whitefield by Vaughan Roberts
  • All four seminars from the conference
  • 'An Honest Conversation' between John ColesLiam Goligher, Hugh Palmer, and Terry Virgo about the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the local church

Preaching from the Old Testament I

While the evangelical church is convinced that the Old Testament is the word of God, we do not preach from it much. We, like those on the road to Emmaus, are "foolish and slow of heart to believe" when presented with the truths of the Old Testament. Yet these are the writings of 2 Timothy, able to "make you wise unto salvation."

"Here is your God!" Isaiah 40

This is the first of three lectures by Walter Kaiser on preaching from the old Testament. This lecture looks at the challenge of preaching from the prophets, and presenting the "living God" whom they presented. He uses Isaiah 40 as an example: a passage which brings us face to face with the majesty of God.

The second and third talks in this series can be found here and here.
