Teaching Isaiah

"Preachers have commonly viewed the Book of Isaiah as too daunting for sequential exposition-- even short series-- and have resorted to using its sixty-six chapters as a handy source for messianic references and an occasional text for a Christmas or Easter homily. David Jackman shows how Isaiah can be preached either lectio continua or in brief series. Though Teaching Isaiah is, by design, not a close textual commentary, Jackman's  painstaking literary, theological and homiletical analyses show how the structures of Isaiah work for the preacher and the teacher. His suggested outlines are a treasure in themselves, as are his penetrating applications and gospel-freighted insights. This much needed book will help God's under shepherds refresh both themselves and their flocks from Isaiah's deep wells."

R. Kent Hughes
Senior Pastor Emeritus, College Church in Wheaton

In the period that Isaiah the prophet lived there was immense political upheaval across the ancient near-east. The people of God had a choice - to follow their own human policies or to follow the promises of God. They chose to be unfaithful. The prophet breaks in and calls them to repent asking them to stop violating the covenant. It is a message that is all too easy to identify with. Yet the powerful message of grace also comes through in this incredible prophecy, foretelling the coming of the Messiah again and again.

"Not a commentary, though David Jackman's careful handling of the text is full of helpful insights; not a series of sermons either, though the headings and the study questions will be an enormous help to preachers and study group leaders. David's section on "Planning a series on Isaiah" has given me the confidence to tackle such a large book. 'Teaching Isaiah' makes an invaluable companion to any other resource on the teacher's shelf."

"David Jackman is the consummate teacher, as countless pastors and students of the Cornhill Training Course have discovered over the years. His book on Isaiah has been long awaited, and will not disappoint. The essence of his teaching on this immense prophet is distilled, with great skill, into something that uniquely complements the best of commentaries as a truly practical aid for the preacher. I am thrilled to see it in print, and rejoice to think of Isaiah's wonderful message being heard more by the Lord's people as a result."

Isaiah 40 is one of the high points of the Old Testament. In it, God's character is revealed, and he wins our love by an irresistible display of his glory.

It is ideally suited to stir up an appetite for him, to remind us how much more there is yet to discover of God.

In this session from the 1992 Lectures for Expository Preachers, David Jackman expounds this passage in a way that will help us preach it to our own congregations, as well as lift our own spiritual horizons to the greatness of God.

Preaching from the Old Testament I

While the evangelical church is convinced that the Old Testament is the word of God, we do not preach from it much. We, like those on the road to Emmaus, are "foolish and slow of heart to believe" when presented with the truths of the Old Testament. Yet these are the writings of 2 Timothy, able to "make you wise unto salvation."

"Here is your God!" Isaiah 40

This is the first of three lectures by Walter Kaiser on preaching from the old Testament. This lecture looks at the challenge of preaching from the prophets, and presenting the "living God" whom they presented. He uses Isaiah 40 as an example: a passage which brings us face to face with the majesty of God.

The second and third talks in this series can be found here and here.
